Personal Background : Dorothea Lange was born on May 26th, 1895 in Hoboken New Jersey. At a young age around seven years old Dorothea had come down with Polio in her right leg which left her right leg to foot weak then her left. During her teen years she went to a high school in New York called New York Training for Teachers after her parents got a divorce and Dorothea moved with her parents. Around the 1920's is when Dorothea Lange found her first inspiration in photography when she was traveling with her first husband around the southwest taking portrait photographs of Native Americans. Dorothea Lange officially got her big break in photography with being popular for her photography in the 1930's when the Great Depression. Lange would take photos of labor strikes and breadlines that she saw throughout this problematic time period. In the 1940's Dorothea was the first women awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship for her photography. Throughout her life she was first married to Maynard Dixon who she has two kids with but they decided to separate in the year 1935. After she was separated from Maynard Dorothea got together and married later on in her life to Paul Taylor who she lived a happily married life with.
Style: Dorothea was a documentary photographer who documented harsh realities to make people self aware of what's going on around them. She wants people to see how they can easily change the harsh things going on around people's lives. Dorothea hopes she can help people by hoping to accomplish helping with social change. Her main style of photography is to give people a social outlook of different perspectives to everybody. Dorothea Lange shows her style as to document in her photographs that people in the world have troubles and how one world can be so different.
Philosophy: Dorothea Lange's ideas behind her photography is to document different perspectives on peoples lives. Her photography documentation were mostly social. Her social documentation shows everybody lives differently some can be good or bad. Lange wanted to show people how bad some peoples living conditions to show awareness and change it. Dorothea Lange is famous more for her photograph called the Migrant Worker that was a popular icon of that time period during the Great Depression. Her photos aren't just based on on the Migrant Worker since she has many of other famous photography photos and portraits.
Influences: Dorothea Langeis a very influential person in my opinion, because she can show in her art work the harsh realities and make it in to something good and it taught me every photo will have a different story behind it. I liked her photos in photography since when looking at a beautiful piece of art work can show people stories. I like how in photography one image can set a mood and shows people how the artist was feeling during their work. Throughout her photos she likes to show people a message and emotions which is important for capturing audiences attention.
